Fun at the Farmer's Market!!


It's been at least 13 weeks since we have last been at the Farmer's Market. How do I know that?? Because, 13 weeks (at least) before that, the San Miguel Seafood people had been selling their wares of fresh fish to the good people of Austin.

Saturday they had shrimp, grouper and red snapper. I don't know how often you have had fresh fish but if you haven't had it in awhile, go down and visit these fine folks next Saturday at the Farmer's Market. At 10 they will have a chef prepare fish (I think they said grilling) for tasting! Yum yum~~ Also: they had a whole Red Snapper in their cooler! How awesome is it to haul out a big fish?? Very awesome! And it kinda made me want to buy the whole fish...

We also bought some bison jerky. I'm sorry: bison is the best thing on Earth! I'm not a huge jerky fan but this jerky is like eating dried steak with spices. Seriously, best jerky ever. Mr. Wonderful gave his thumbs-up and we split some yesterday ($6.00 for four thick sticks* isn't exactly cheap but DAMN it was awesome) during a jerky break. Yeah, jerky break.

We took the shrimp and intended to make something on Saturday but cravings dictated we push that to Sunday. We made Shrimp Creole and it is really good. If you've never deveined and peeled shrimp, you're missing out. Peeling shrimp is a nice stress reliever and deveining makes you wonder how the shrimp functioned in the ocean. "It's pretty much just meat", as Mr. Wonderful recounted.

We paired the Shrimp Creole with some slaw that I made from CSA radishes and cabbage (with some oil, scallions, and BBQ sauce) and a dish I modified. I basically decided to clean out the fridge for the next CSA installment so that meant getting rid of all the greens that were still salvageable. I found a greens and potatoes soup that I made into a side dish. I cooked the greens (which include Kale, Swiss Chard, Beet Greens, and I think that's it) with a little bit of butter and then added the chopped potatoes with some water. It made a surprisingly flavorful dish! I was happy that I got rid of so many CSA items too, in such a timely matter. Especially since it was initially hard to find radish dishes (in fact, only one cookbook even had an entry for radishes).

All was ready just in time for the Super Bowl. Which we watched for approximately 15 minutes before switching to Mythbusters. Which showed them emptying a pig belly full of "jelly" that made me sick so we switched to "When Animals Attack IV" or some such nonsense.

What a great day! Go Giants!

Sounds like a nice time at the market. Was it a pretty day?

Where do they get their fish? The Gulf of Mexico? Is that a stupid question?
